English

Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah; there is no deity but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest; and there is no power nor strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. And may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah—may the blessings and peace of Allah the Exalted be upon him and his family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from doubt, polytheism, hypocrisy, dissension, bad character, and an unfortunate outcome regarding my wealth, family, and children. O Allah, I ask You for Your pleasure and Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your wrath and the Fire. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.

Detailed Explanation

This beautiful supplication combines praise of Allah, declaration of faith, seeking Allah’s protection from spiritual and worldly harms, asking for Paradise and Allah’s pleasure, and seeking refuge from the trials of the grave and life. It is a comprehensive dua for a believer’s faith, character, family, wealth, and Hereafter. 1. سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ — Subḥānallāh “Glory be to Allah.” This means that Allah is completely free from every imperfection, weakness, injustice, and defect. The believer recognizes Allah’s absolute perfection and greatness. 2. وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ — Wal-ḥamdu lillāh “All praise belongs to Allah.” Every form of praise and gratitude belongs to Allah. Whatever blessings we have—faith, health, family, wealth, opportunities, and guidance—are ultimately from Him. 3. وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ — Wa lā ilāha illallāh “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.” This is the declaration of Tawḥīd. It affirms that Allah alone deserves worship, obedience, ultimate reliance, and devotion. 4. وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ — Wallāhu akbar “And Allah is the Greatest.” Allah is greater than everything. His power, knowledge, mercy, and authority are beyond comparison. This statement reminds the believer not to allow worldly worries to become greater in the heart than trust in Allah. 5. وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ Wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhil-ʿaliyyil-ʿaẓīm “There is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.” A believer acknowledges that success in worship, patience, overcoming difficulties, and doing good ultimately depend upon Allah’s help. It teaches humility, reliance upon Allah, and freedom from dependence on one’s own strength alone. 6. وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ “And blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” The supplication then includes ṣalāh and salām upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ expresses love, respect, and reverence for him and appreciation for the message he conveyed. 7. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّكِّ “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from doubt.” The believer asks Allah to protect the heart from doubts that can weaken certainty in faith, worship, and trust in Allah. It is a prayer for steadfastness and certainty. 8. وَالشِّرْكِ — Wash-shirk “And from associating partners with You.” Shirk means directing acts of worship or divine attributes toward someone besides Allah. Seeking protection from shirk emphasizes the importance of maintaining pure Tawḥīd. 9. وَالنِّفَاقِ — Wan-nifāq “And from hypocrisy.” The believer asks Allah for protection from hypocrisy—especially the condition where a person's outward appearance differs from what is hidden in the heart. It is a reminder to seek sincerity (ikhlāṣ) in worship and actions. 10. وَالشِّقَاقِ — Wash-shiqāq “And from discord and conflict.” The dua asks Allah for protection from unnecessary disputes, hostility, division, and destructive conflict. It encourages the believer to seek peace, reconciliation, good manners, and harmony with others. 11. وَسُوءِ الْأَخْلَاقِ — Wa sū'il-akhlāq “And from bad character.” Good character is an important part of Islamic life. This part of the dua asks Allah to protect the believer from qualities such as: Anger and harshness Arrogance Jealousy Cruelty Dishonesty Impatience Abusive speech It is essentially a prayer that Allah purify the heart and improve one's conduct. 12. وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَالْمُنْقَلَبِ This portion asks Allah for protection from bad outcomes and unpleasant consequences. The meaning can be understood broadly as asking Allah to protect a person from seeing or experiencing things that bring sorrow, harm, disgrace, or difficulty, and from returning to an unfortunate or harmful situation. It teaches the believer to ask Allah not only for immediate goodness but also for a good final outcome. 13. فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ وَالْوَلَدِ “Regarding wealth, family, and children.” The dua specifically mentions three major areas of worldly life: Wealth We ask Allah to protect our wealth from loss, harm, misuse, and anything that takes away its blessing. Family We ask Allah to protect our family from difficulties, discord, and harmful circumstances. Children We ask Allah to protect our children, guide them, grant them righteousness, and make them a source of goodness and comfort. This section reminds us that wealth and family are blessings, but they also require Allah's protection and guidance. 14. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رِضَاكَ “O Allah, I ask You for Your pleasure.” This is one of the most beautiful requests in the dua. The believer does not ask only for worldly success. The greatest goal is Allah’s pleasure (Riḍā). When Allah is pleased with a servant, that is greater than worldly wealth, status, or success. 15. وَالْجَنَّةَ — Wal-jannah “And Paradise.” The believer asks Allah to grant entry into Jannah, the everlasting home of reward. This teaches us to keep the Hereafter as the ultimate destination and to live our worldly life with that goal in mind. 16. أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَالنَّارِ “I seek refuge in Your displeasure and from the Fire.” The believer asks Allah for protection from His displeasure and from Jahannam. This combines hope and fear: hope for Allah’s pleasure and Paradise, and fear of His displeasure and punishment. A balanced believer turns to Allah with both hope in His mercy and fear of falling into disobedience. 17. اللَّهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave.” The believer asks Allah for protection from the trials and difficulties associated with the grave. This reminds us that life does not end with worldly existence. A Muslim should prepare for the Hereafter through faith, sincere worship, repentance, good deeds, and righteous conduct. 18. وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ “And I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.” This is a comprehensive request for protection. Trials of life These may include temptations, difficulties, desires, misguidance, hardship, and circumstances that can weaken one's faith. Trials of death The believer asks Allah to grant a good ending, protect them at the time of death, and keep them firm upon faith. 🌙 Overall Message of the Dua The supplication follows a beautiful spiritual progression: Praise Allah → Affirm Tawḥīd → Depend upon Allah → Send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ → Seek protection from spiritual diseases → Seek protection for character, wealth and family → Ask for Allah’s pleasure and Paradise → Seek refuge from Hell → Seek protection from the trials of the grave, life and death. In simple words: “O Allah, You are Perfect and Greatest. I praise You and worship You alone. Help me remain firm in faith, protect me from doubt, shirk, hypocrisy, conflict and bad character. Protect my wealth, family and children from harmful outcomes. Grant me Your pleasure and Paradise, protect me from Your displeasure and the Fire, and keep me safe from the trials of the grave, life and death.” It is therefore a comprehensive dua seeking goodness in both this world and the Hereafter, while asking Allah for protection from the greatest spiritual and worldly harms.
