Destination Overview

Masjid-e-Kheef (Masjid Al-Khayf) is one of the most revered and historic mosques in Islam, situated at the foot of Mount Mina (Jabal Mina) near the smaller Jamarat in Mina, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The word "Kheef" (الخيف) refers to the area between the base of a mountain and the valley, which is precisely where the mosque is located. It holds immense religious significance because it is believed that numerous prophets, including Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, offered prayers at this blessed site during Hajj. Masjid-e-Kheef is especially renowned for its connection with the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada') of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. During his stay in Mina, the Prophet ﷺ performed prayers in this mosque while carrying out the rites of Hajj. Following his Sunnah, millions of pilgrims visit or pray in the mosque during the Days of Tashreeq (11th–13th of Dhul-Hijjah), making it one of the most spiritually significant landmarks of Mina. According to authentic narrations, many prophets prayed at this location. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Seventy prophets prayed in Masjid Al-Khayf." Although scholars have discussed the chain of transmission of this narration, Masjid Al-Khayf has long been recognized in Islamic tradition as a place associated with the worship of numerous prophets, adding to its historical and spiritual importance. Throughout Islamic history, Masjid-e-Kheef has undergone several expansions and renovations. The present structure was extensively rebuilt and enlarged by the Saudi authorities to accommodate the large number of worshippers during the Hajj season. Today, the mosque covers approximately 25,000 square meters and can accommodate more than 45,000 worshippers. It includes spacious prayer halls, multiple entrances, modern ablution facilities, air-conditioning, and two elegant minarets that overlook the valley of Mina. Architecturally, the mosque combines traditional Islamic design with modern infrastructure. Its wide courtyards and organized layout enable thousands of pilgrims to pray comfortably during the busiest days of Hajj. The peaceful atmosphere inside the mosque offers pilgrims an opportunity to perform Salah, recite the Qur'an, and engage in remembrance of Allah while reflecting on the legacy of the prophets. Masjid-e-Kheef is located close to the Jamarat Bridge, making it easily accessible for pilgrims performing the ritual of Ramy al-Jamarat (stoning of the pillars). Many pilgrims stop at the mosque before or after completing this rite to offer voluntary prayers and remember Allah. Although praying in Masjid-e-Kheef is not an obligatory part of Hajj, it is considered a blessed opportunity to worship at a site closely connected to the Prophet ﷺ and many earlier messengers. Today, Masjid-e-Kheef stands as one of the most important Islamic landmarks in Mina. It symbolizes the continuity of prophetic worship, devotion to Allah, and the unity of Muslims who gather from every corner of the world to perform Hajj. Visiting this historic mosque allows pilgrims to connect with centuries of Islamic heritage while following the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his Farewell Pilgrimage.
