Translation

English

Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah; there is no deity but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest; and there is no power nor strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. And may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah—may the blessings and peace of Allah the Exalted be upon him and his family. O Allah, You know my secret and my open affairs, so accept my plea; You know my need, so grant me my request; and You know what is within my soul, so forgive my sins. O Allah, I ask You for faith that permeates my heart and for sincere certainty, so that I may know that nothing will befall me except what You have decreed for me, and that I may be content with what You have apportioned for me—O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Short Meaning

“Glory be to Allah, all praise belongs to Allah, there is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest; there is no power or strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Almighty; blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. O Allah, You know my secret and what I reveal, so accept my excuse, fulfill my needs, forgive my sins, grant my heart true faith and sincere certainty, and make me content with what You have decreed and apportioned for me.”

Detailed Explanation

This beautiful supplication begins with praise and glorification of Allah, followed by salutations upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and then turns into a deeply personal prayer asking Allah for forgiveness, fulfillment of needs, sincere faith, certainty, and contentment with His decree. 1. سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ “Glory be to Allah, and all praise belongs to Allah.” The words Subḥānallāh declare that Allah is completely free from every imperfection, weakness, injustice, and deficiency. Al-ḥamdu lillāh means that every form of perfect praise belongs to Allah. A believer recognizes Allah's countless blessings and praises Him for His mercy, guidance, protection, and favors. Together, these words begin the supplication with recognition of Allah's greatness and gratitude for His blessings. 2. وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.” This is the declaration of Tawḥīd—the absolute oneness of Allah. It means that Allah alone deserves worship, obedience, reliance, and ultimate devotion. A believer turns to Him because there is no one who can truly fulfill needs, forgive sins, or provide ultimate help except Allah. 3. وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ “And Allah is the Greatest.” Allāhu Akbar reminds the heart that Allah is greater than everything: Greater than our difficulties Greater than our worries Greater than our fears Greater than our desires Greater than anything we may depend upon When a person says Allāhu Akbar, they place their problems in perspective and remember that nothing is beyond Allah's power. 4. وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ “There is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Almighty.” This teaches a believer that all true ability and strength ultimately come from Allah. We make efforts, but success comes through Allah. We plan, but outcomes remain in Allah's hands. We seek treatment, work for our livelihood, travel, worship, and strive to overcome difficulties—but our ability to do these things is itself a blessing from Allah. This statement therefore teaches humility, reliance upon Allah, and freedom from excessive dependence on ourselves or creation. 5. وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ “And blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” The supplication then sends blessings and peace upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Sending ṣalawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ is an expression of love, respect, and gratitude for his role in conveying Allah's message and teaching humanity the path of guidance. The Personal Supplication 6. اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ سِرِّي وَعَلَانِيَتِي “O Allah, You know my secret and what I reveal.” The believer acknowledges that nothing is hidden from Allah. Allah knows: What we say openly What we keep hidden Our thoughts Our intentions Our fears Our hopes Our difficulties Our weaknesses This brings comfort to a believer because sometimes there are feelings and problems that cannot be explained to anyone else—but Allah already knows them completely. 7. فَاقْبَلْ مَعْذِرَتِي “So accept my excuse.” The servant asks Allah to accept his sincere excuse and pardon his shortcomings. This expresses humility. Instead of claiming perfection, the believer admits weakness and turns to Allah seeking His mercy and acceptance. It teaches us that when we make mistakes, we should not become hopeless. We should acknowledge our shortcomings, repent sincerely, and return to Allah. 8. وَتَعْلَمُ حَاجَتِي فَأَعْطِنِي سُؤْلِي “You know my need, so grant me what I ask.” Allah knows our needs even before we express them. The word ḥājah refers to one's need, while su'lī refers to what one asks or requests. This part of the dua teaches us to present our needs directly before Allah. Whether the need concerns family, livelihood, guidance, difficulties, forgiveness, or the affairs of the heart, Allah knows it all. At the same time, a believer asks with humility, knowing that Allah gives according to His wisdom. 9. وَتَعْلَمُ مَا فِي نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي “You know what is within me, so forgive my sins.” This is a powerful request for forgiveness. Allah knows what is inside the heart, including things that other people cannot see. The servant therefore asks Allah to forgive his sins and shortcomings. The passage combines knowledge of Allah's complete awareness with hope in His forgiveness. It reminds us that sincere repentance should always be accompanied by hope in Allah's mercy. Asking for True Faith and Certainty 10. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ إِيمَانًا يُبَاشِرُ قَلْبِي “O Allah, I ask You for faith that reaches my heart.” This is more than simply asking to believe with the tongue. The supplicant asks for īmān that becomes deeply rooted in the heart—faith that influences one's character, actions, decisions, patience, gratitude, and relationship with Allah. True faith should affect how a person lives. It gives strength during hardship, gratitude during ease, hope during difficulty, and humility during success. 11. وَيَقِينًا صَادِقًا “And sincere certainty.” The believer asks Allah for yaqīn—deep and sincere certainty. Yaqīn means having a firm heart that trusts Allah and His promises. A person with strong certainty does not mean that difficulties disappear. Rather, the person develops the inner conviction that Allah's wisdom is perfect, His knowledge is complete, and His decree is never without wisdom. 12. حَتَّى أَعْلَمَ أَنَّهُ لَا يُصِيبُنِي إِلَّا مَا كَتَبْتَ لِي “So that I may know that nothing can befall me except what You have written for me.” This expresses belief in Allah's decree (Qadar). The believer recognizes that whatever ultimately reaches him cannot escape Allah's knowledge and decree. This understanding can bring tremendous peace to the heart. It does not mean abandoning effort or responsibility. Rather, a Muslim makes lawful efforts while trusting Allah with the outcome. 13. وَأَرْضَى بِمَا قَسَمْتَ لِي “And that I may be content with what You have apportioned for me.” This is one of the deepest requests in the dua. The servant does not merely ask Allah to give him what he wants; he asks for the ability to be content with what Allah has chosen and apportioned for him. This is riḍā—contentment with Allah's decree. Contentment does not mean that a person cannot make dua for improvement or work to change difficult circumstances. Rather, it means that while making every lawful effort, the heart remains convinced that Allah's wisdom is greater than our limited understanding. 14. يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ “O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.” The dua concludes by calling upon Allah through His immense mercy. After acknowledging Allah's greatness, confessing weakness, asking for forgiveness, requesting faith and certainty, and asking for contentment, the servant ends by appealing to Allah's mercy. This gives the entire supplication a message of hope. 🌙 Overall Spiritual Meaning This dua takes the believer through a beautiful spiritual journey: Glorification of Allah → Praise → Tawḥīd → Recognition of Allah's greatness → Reliance upon Him → Salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ → Confession of weakness → Seeking forgiveness → Asking for one's needs → Sincere faith → Certainty → Trust in Allah's decree → Contentment → Hope in Allah's mercy. The central message is: “O Allah, You know me completely. You know my hidden and apparent affairs, my needs, my weaknesses and my sins. Forgive me, strengthen my faith, give my heart certainty, fulfill my lawful needs, help me trust Your decree, and grant me contentment with whatever You have chosen for me.” It is therefore a supplication of Tawḥīd, repentance, reliance, faith, patience, contentment, and hope in Allah's mercy.
