Detailed Explanation

This beautiful supplication combines Tawhid, praise of Allah, reliance upon Him, salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, faith in Allah’s revelation, commitment to His covenant and Sunnah, and a request for forgiveness, well-being, Paradise, and protection from Hellfire. 1. سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ Subḥānallāh Meaning: “Glory be to Allah.” This declares that Allah is completely free from every imperfection, weakness, injustice, and anything that does not befit His Majesty. When a pilgrim says Subḥānallāh during Tawaf, they are glorifying the Lord of the Ka‘bah and recognizing His absolute perfection. 2. وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ Wal-ḥamdu lillāh Meaning: “And all praise belongs to Allah.” This expresses gratitude and praise to Allah for His countless blessings. Being able to stand in the Sacred Mosque and perform Tawaf is itself a tremendous blessing. The pilgrim acknowledges that every form of true praise ultimately belongs to Allah. 3. وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ Wa lā ilāha illallāh Meaning: “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.” This is the declaration of Tawhid. The pilgrim affirms that worship belongs exclusively to Allah. During Tawaf, this statement reminds the heart that although the pilgrim is circling the Ka‘bah, the worship is directed to Allah alone, not to the Ka‘bah itself. 4. وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ Wallāhu akbar Meaning: “And Allah is the Greatest.” Allah is greater than everything—the pilgrim's worries, difficulties, worldly concerns, hopes, and fears. Saying Allāhu Akbar during Tawaf helps the pilgrim turn their heart away from worldly distractions and toward the greatness of Allah. 5. وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ Wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh Meaning: “There is no power and no strength except through Allah.” This is an expression of dependence upon Allah. A person may have wealth, physical strength, knowledge, or ability, but ultimately every ability comes from Allah. The pilgrim therefore recognizes: “O Allah, I cannot accomplish anything except with the help and permission You give me.” It is especially meaningful during a journey of worship because the pilgrim asks Allah to make the worship easy and accepted. 6. الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ Al-ʿAliyyil-ʿAẓīm Meaning: “The Most High, the Most Great.” Allah is Al-ʿAliyy, the Most High, exalted above His creation, and Al-ʿAẓīm, the Magnificent and Most Great. These words reinforce the greatness and majesty of the One whom the pilgrim is worshipping. Salawat Upon the Prophet ﷺ 7. وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ Waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh Meaning: “And may blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.” The pilgrim sends blessings and peace upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This reminds us that the Prophet ﷺ taught the Ummah how to worship Allah and demonstrated the rites of Hajj and Umrah. 8. صَلَّى اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ Ṣallallāhu taʿālā ʿalayhi wa ālihi wa sallam Meaning: “May Allah Most High bless him, his family, and grant him peace.” Sending salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ is an expression of love, respect, and gratitude for his guidance. The Second Part of the Dua 9. اللَّهُمَّ إِيمَانًا بِكَ Allāhumma īmānan bika Meaning: “O Allah, [I ask for] faith in You.” The pilgrim asks Allah to grant and strengthen īmān—true faith in Allah. This includes believing in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree. The most important thing is not merely performing the physical Tawaf, but having a heart filled with sincere faith. 10. وَتَصْدِيقًا بِكِتَابِكَ Wa taṣdīqan bikitābik Meaning: “And affirming and believing in Your Book.” The pilgrim declares belief in Allah's revelation, especially the Qur'an, believing it to be the Book revealed by Allah. This also reminds the pilgrim that worship should be based upon revelation and obedience to Allah. 11. وَوَفَاءً بِعَهْدِكَ Wa wafā'an biʿahdik Meaning: “And fulfilling Your covenant.” The believer asks Allah for the ability to remain faithful to the commitments made to Him. It is a reminder that worship is not limited to the moments spent in Makkah. A pilgrim should try to carry the obedience and devotion developed during Umrah back into everyday life. 12. وَاتِّبَاعًا لِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ وَحَبِيبِكَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ Wattibāʿan lisunnati nabiyyika wa ḥabībika Muḥammad ﷺ Meaning: “And following the Sunnah of Your Prophet and Your beloved Muhammad ﷺ.” This expresses the desire to follow the guidance and example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The pilgrim is essentially asking Allah: “O Allah, help me not only to worship You, but to worship You according to the guidance taught by Your Messenger ﷺ.” The Final Supplication 13. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ Allāhumma innī as'alukal-ʿafw Meaning: “O Allah, I ask You for pardon.” Al-ʿAfw means pardon and forgiveness—asking Allah to overlook one's sins and erase their consequences. It is a beautiful request because every pilgrim comes before Allah conscious of their shortcomings and in need of His mercy. 14. وَالْعَافِيَةَ Wal-ʿāfiyah Meaning: “And well-being.” ʿĀfiyah is a comprehensive request for protection and well-being. It can include well-being in one's faith, body, family, worldly life, and Hereafter. The pilgrim asks Allah not merely for forgiveness, but also for protection from difficulties and harm. 15. وَالْمَغْفِرَةَ الدَّائِمَةَ Wal-maghfiratad-dā'imah Meaning: “And everlasting forgiveness.” The pilgrim asks Allah for continuing forgiveness and mercy. This teaches an important lesson: a believer should never become confident about their own deeds. Instead, they continuously turn toward Allah seeking His forgiveness. 16. فِي الدِّينِ وَالدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ Fid-dīni wad-dunyā wal-ākhirah Meaning: “In religion, this world, and the Hereafter.” This is a comprehensive request. The pilgrim asks Allah for goodness in: Religion: steadfastness upon faith and obedience. This world: health, safety, lawful provision, family well-being, and beneficial circumstances. The Hereafter: forgiveness, mercy, Paradise, and salvation. Islam teaches the believer to seek Allah's goodness in both this life and the eternal life to come. 17. وَالْفَوْزَ بِالْجَنَّةِ Wal-fawza bil-jannah Meaning: “And success in attaining Paradise.” The ultimate success is not wealth, status, or worldly achievement. The greatest success is entering Jannah by Allah's mercy. The pilgrim therefore ends the request by asking Allah for the greatest eternal reward. 18. وَالنَّجَاةَ مِنَ النَّارِ Wan-najāta minan-nār Meaning: “And salvation from the Fire.” The pilgrim asks Allah to protect them from Jahannam. Thus, the final part of the dua beautifully brings together the two greatest hopes of a believer: Attaining Paradise and being saved from Hellfire.
