Rabbanaa aatinaa fid-dunyaa hasanatan, wa fil-aakhirati hasanatan, wa qinaa ‘adhaaban-naar, wa adkhilnal-jannata ma‘al-abraar, yaa ‘Azeez, yaa Ghaffaar, yaa Rabbal-‘aalameen.
Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. Admit us into Paradise with the righteous, O Almighty, O Most Forgiving, O Lord of all the worlds.
This is a comprehensive and beautiful du‘a asking Allah for goodness in this world and the Hereafter, protection from the punishment of Hellfire, and entry into Paradise among the righteous. It combines worldly well-being, eternal success, forgiveness, and complete dependence upon Allah. 1. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً “Our Lord, grant us good in this world.” The supplicant begins by addressing Allah as “Our Lord.” This expresses humility, dependence, and a close relationship with Allah. The phrase “good in this world” is broad and includes everything beneficial for a believer—halal provision, good health, beneficial knowledge, righteous family, peace of heart, protection from difficulties, and the ability to live a life pleasing to Allah. It teaches us that Islam does not ask us to abandon the lawful blessings of this world. Rather, we ask Allah to give us worldly blessings that help us live with faith, gratitude, and righteousness. 2. وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً “And good in the Hereafter.” The Hereafter is greater and everlasting. This part of the du‘a reminds us that worldly success alone is not enough. The greatest goodness of the Hereafter includes Allah's forgiveness, His mercy, acceptance of our deeds, safety from punishment, and entry into Jannah. A believer therefore seeks a balance: goodness in this temporary life and, above all, success in the eternal life to come. 3. وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ “And protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” Here, the believer seeks Allah's protection from Jahannam and its punishment. This teaches us to have both hope and fear: hope in Allah's mercy and Paradise, while fearing disobedience and its consequences. It is also a reminder that salvation is ultimately through Allah's mercy, while we must strive sincerely to obey Him and avoid sins. 4. وَأَدْخِلْنَا الْجَنَّةَ مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ “And admit us into Paradise with the righteous.” This is a beautiful request for entry into Jannah in the company of the righteous. The word “al-abrar” refers to those who are righteous, sincere, obedient, and devoted to Allah. The supplication therefore asks not only for Paradise but also for the blessing of being among people of righteousness and faith. 5. يَا عَزِيزُ “O Almighty.” Al-‘Azīz is one of Allah's beautiful names, conveying His absolute might, strength, honor, and invincibility. Calling upon Allah by this name reminds the believer that Allah has complete power over every situation. Nothing is difficult for Him, and no difficulty is beyond His ability to remove. 6. يَا غَفَّارُ “O Most Forgiving.” Al-Ghaffār refers to Allah's abundant and repeated forgiveness. This part of the du‘a gives hope to those who have made mistakes. A believer should never despair of Allah's mercy, but should sincerely repent, seek forgiveness, and strive to improve. It reminds us that Allah's forgiveness is greater than our sins when repentance is sincere. 7. يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ “O Lord of all the worlds.” The du‘a concludes by calling Allah “Rabb al-‘Ālamīn” — the Lord of all the worlds. Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, and Master of all creation. This ending reinforces complete trust in Allah: He knows our needs, hears our prayers, and has power over every matter. Spiritual Message This du‘a beautifully brings together the believer's complete needs: Goodness in this world Goodness in the Hereafter Protection from Hellfire Entry into Paradise Companionship with the righteous Allah's forgiveness and mercy Complete trust in the Lord of all worlds A Reminder from AL KOUNSAR TRAVELS As pilgrims make du‘a during their sacred journey, this prayer is a beautiful reminder that the purpose of worship is not merely to seek worldly blessings. We should ask Allah for a blessed life, a forgiven heart, righteous deeds, protection from punishment, and eternal success in Jannah. May Allah accept our du‘as, forgive our shortcomings, grant us goodness in this world and the Hereafter, protect us from the Fire, and admit us into Jannatul Firdaus among the righteous. Ameen.
